Why Should I Profile My Computer System?

If you perform a system profile on your computer when it's healthy, you'll have a full report on hand in case you need information about your computer at a later date. Some "Profilers" even give you a diagnosis of system problems.

What's S.I.W.?

  • System Information for Windows is an advanced system tool that gathers detailed information about your computer system properties and settings and displays it in an extremely comprehensible manner. Just download this small file to your desktop, run it, and save the report it creates to a flash drive/thumb drive.
  • Keep a printout on hand in case you need it if you cannot boot your computer. It's also very handy to have available for a Technician in case you need to get your computer serviced. This little tool is a "stand alone" product and doesn't get installed on your computer.
  • Even though S.I.W. provides your Windows key in it's report, it may not be correct for your computer. Many companies like HP, Compaq, Acer, Dell, eMachines, Toshiba, etc. use "Bulk Licensing" codes. Your actual Windows Key is on the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker on the exterior of your computer. It's a 25 digit code and the little "sticker" contains your valid Windows key if you wish to do a clean Windows install rather than loading up all the crapware originally installed on your system. You can use a copy of a genuine Windows cd along with your legitimate 25 digit key to install just Windows on your system. Then goto the manufacturers website to download just the drivers your computer requires. In actual fact Windows will automatically find some or even all of the drivers for your computer. I often do this then goto Windows update and it will usually find the rest of them there. If you want to perform a clean install just go a Google search for "Clean Install Windows (XP/Vista/Etc.)?". Just follow the directions. Make absolutely sure that you've backed up all your data. This includes you documents, photos, music, videos, email, address book and favorites. You can search Google on how to find the last 3 items listed here.
